There’s No ‘gham’ in Singham

Director Rohit Shetty is in his elements and so is good friend Ajay Devgn. The duo is back to their favorite Goa for their latest formula flick ‘Singham’ where Ajay plays an honest cop tracking and demolishing the bad guy. Plain fare this, but you cannot write off the movie because it does have its moments.

Singham Movie Review
The storyline is simple to the point of simplistic. Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) is an upright police inspector posted in a village near the Goa-Maharashtra border. Circumstances force him to take on Jaikant Shikre (Prakash Raj), a notorious criminal and the man responsible for the killing of an honest cop Rakesh Kadam.
Bajirao lands in the city of 'Goa' and the battle lines are drawn between the two. Over a period of time, Bajirao, ably supported by his girlfriend Kavya Bhosle (Kajal Aggarwal) manages to outwit the villian. What's more, Bajirao's policies force his corrupt colleagues to reform and switch sides.
A remake of the Tamil flick by the same name starring Surya, the movie has the Rohit Shetty stamp and leaves you feeling that this might well be 'Golmaal-4' in disguise. There's a dash of 'Dabangg' to it with a mix of comic masala via the likes of Ashok Saraf and others.
5 reasons why you should watch the movie

There’s No ‘gham’ in Singham
1. To watch 'action star' Ajay Devgn playing his forte role. With well sculpted six-packs, he delivers the angry-honest-cop role to the T. There is never a dull moment in his performance through the movie. In fact, one can say that this is Ajay at his beefy best.
2. Prakash Raj seems to be carving a niche for himself in Bollywood with directors making him reprise his roles from the originals. After successfully playing baddie in flicks like 'Wanted', Prakash's role in 'Singham' could well be the one that will cement his place outside of south India.
3. Looks like Salman Khan has set off a trend starting with his 'Wanted'. Top stars are queuing up to play policeman and Ajay is second on the list with Aamir Khan set to follow the act in his next flick. If the hero is a cop, then the police force has to be shown in good light, which is what Shetty does.
4. Having said so, this is no one-dimensional movie and has its lighter moments through the bumbling acts of a police force that supports the hero. The lighter moments are led by the inimitable Ashok Saraf with crispy dialogues thrown in. Thankfully, there are no item-numbers!
5. This is the second cop movie coming out of Goa in recent times after the unsuccessful 'Dum Maro Dum' where Abhisbehk Bachchan essayed the cop. Shetty captures Goa as only he can. His penchant for blowing up cars is preserved in 'Singham' too!
5 reasons why you shouldn’t watch the movie

Singham Movie Review
1. The storyline consists of only that - one line! The good versus bad tale with the 'goodie' bashing up the 'baddie' in the final reels. The predictability is sad, given that Salman's cop movies had a dash of unpredictability - be it 'Dabangg' or 'Wanted'.
2. At a time Bollywood seems to be walking up to the benefits of shorter movies, Singham stretches a good thing beyond reasonable limits. At close to two-and-half-hours, we felt the need for that extra can of popcorn towards the latter half.
3. The songs are not catchy enough for a re-run. It is a hero-oriented movie, and the leading lady appears in bits and pieces. Seems like Kajal Agarwal will need to wait some more for her dream role in Bollywood. If her debut movie was a damp squib, this one is a wet blanket!
4. If you like Ajay in comic roles, then this one is not for you. He is jumping, punching, kicking and screaming all the time. Unlike the original where Surya had a few funny moments, Ajay seems to have got his make-up man to fix the scowl on his face.
5. Finally, in case you are a diehard fan of Rohit Shetty's comedies, then we suggest you spend your weekend watching the India-England test match at the Lord's. As with his lead actor, the director is back to where it all began for him in 2003 with 'Zameen' - the action flick with Devgn and Abhishek Bachchan that told the tale of a hijack by terrorists (Remember IC-814?).
